Scoliosis is the term for a spine that curves or twists abnormally. Often, the cause is unknown, but sometimes it seems to be related to a tumor, infection, birth defect or other abnormality. Researchers have not determined exactly what causes scoliosis, but they have found evidence that scoliosis is related to a defect in the nervous system that controls posture, body positioning and balance.
Scientists have also determined that scoliosis is not caused by poor posture. Most people with scoliosis suffer no ill effects. However, in severe cases, it can cause breathing or heart difficulties.
According to studies, bracing straightens curves about half of the time, but the correction may be lost over time.
Electrical stimulation has been tried and proven not to work, and plaster casts often create emotional difficulties for patients. Surgical approaches carry risk and no guarantee of success. Doctors now recommend not treating scoliosis aggressively until less invasive options have been explored.
By correcting the vertebral subluxation complex, chiropractic treatment can improve the function of the nervous system, thereby improving the functioning of the body. Study after study has shown significant positive results for scoliosis sufferers after chiropractic treatment. While we cannot promise that with chiropractic treatment every person will experience total correction of the curvature, the majority will see moderate to significant improvement. And when subluxations are resolved, the body’s resistance to disease is greatly enhanced.
